Maybe to dig through tree bark and hard soil to look for water/food during droughts? But I mean I'm sure female elephants can still function fine without the tusks, considering they have the protection of the herd and male bulls who can dig for food. Maybe we want to protect them because elephants have, after all, been famous with their tusks too. And it'd be a shame if one day they stopped having them altogether, wouldn't that make them a little less 'elephant' in a sense- to evolve without tusks? Especially if they've had it for so long now?Almost 6 years ago
